Theme One - Development and critical examination of the therapy process
Much of the research to date in the field of Speech, Language and Communication (SLC) disorders has focused on the nature and symptomatology of the disorders themselves. There is relatively little that addresses the therapy process, its impact and acceptability. Research in SLTRU aims to make explicit the critical components of therapy, to develop and evaluate new therapies and to describe and evaluate existing ones.

Theme Two - The innovative exploitation of technology to deliver speech and language therapy
The world of technology is fast moving. Yet little of the innovation finds its way into therapy for communication disorders. This area of research is one of the unit's foundations and strengths. The aim is to harness a broad range of technology to improve the reliability and specificity of assessments, to improve diagnostics, facilitate access to treatment and support the management of clinical practice.

Theme Three - Life Span perspectives on speech & language disorders
This theme aims to investigate the progress and impact of communication disorders across the life span of individuals and their families. This is a relatively new theme to the Unit's research profile, included in recognition of the impact of speech language and communication impairments across the life span of an individual and their families. For children, we are still discovering the long term impact of early speech and language disorders; for adults with communication impairments aquired as a result of disease or trauma, the impairment can then become lifelong.
