Attitudes to Communicating with Speech Impaired People
P Enderby and J Emerson
Funded by The Nuffield Foundation
April 1994 - March 1995
The aim of this project was to identify the concerns of speech impaired people and members of the general public who might communicate with them so that therapy programmes and public awareness campaigns could be more accurately targeted. People with a variety of speech impairments took part in interviews, discussion groups with the general public and an experimental study examining interactions between members of the public and speech impaired people.
Benchmarking using Outcome Measures
A John, P Enderby, B Petheram, A Hughes
Funded by The Underwood Trust
April 1998 - October 2001
This project grew from the development of outcome measures for speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and rehabilitation nurses. Nine districts participated in the study, which aimed to compare the therapy service in different Trusts according to different criteria. Information on the types and difficulties of clients accessing services, exiting services and the amount of change in the areas of impairment, disability, handicap and well-being associated with the course of treatment was collected.
Computer administered home practice for people with dysarthria
C Dobinson, B Petheram, P Enderby
Funded by Action Medical Research
October 2001 - March 2005
This project aimed to investigate the feasibility of using computers for independent practice by clients with dysarthria. The principle underpinning the project was that frequent and intensive practice will reap higher rewards in terms of recovery or compensation. It is felt that the delivery of feedback and practice offered by the use of a computer will aid performance and encourage practice.

A Hughes, P Enderby and P Butt
Funded by NHS Central Audit Funds via
October 1995 - October 1996
This project was a national audit to compare the management of swallowing problems (dysphagia) in six centres around the country with a view to assessing the precautions taken against aspiration in patients in the acute stages of stroke.
